Space Economy Days 2025
The European Centre for Space Economy and Commerce (ECSECO) recently hosted the second edition of its Space Economy Days at the ESA Headquarters in Paris. Over two days, members of the ECSECO community came together to explore the theme "Measuring Space Benefits for Earth." With 67 participants joining both in person and online, the event offered a dynamic mix of expert presentations, insightful discussions, and opportunities for collaboration across sectors.
The first day opened with welcoming remarks from Geraldine Naja (ESA) and an engaging introduction from Vito Albino, Chair of ECSECO. Isabella Poldrugo, Deputy Head of Unit at the EU Space Policy (DG DEFIS), European Commission, then delivered a compelling talk on the importance of impact assessment in the space sector, setting the stage for two days focused on tangible value and measurable outcomes.
Economic perspectives were a key theme throughout the day. Rob Harbron and Tacye Hong of Oxford Economics presented findings on the economic impact of space in Europe, while Patrick Besha (NASA) offered comparative insights from the United States. Environmental considerations followed, with Jessica Delaval (ESA Clean Space) and Natascha Wonneberger (Deloitte) delving into the sustainability challenges and opportunities associated with space activity. The day wrapped up with a networking cocktail, allowing participants to continue the conversation and forge new connections in a relaxed and informal setting.
Day two built on this momentum with a powerful keynote from Dan Hodges (UKRI) and thoughtful contributions from Alyssa Frayling and Ewan Dallas (know.space) on innovation frameworks in the research sector. The programme also highlighted the societal benefits of space through a range of practical case studies. Mathieu Luinaud (PWC) explored asteroid risk management, while Geoff Sawyer (EARSC) and Alessandra Tassa (ESA) demonstrated how Earth observation is improving water resource management. In another key session, Martin Sunkevic (EUSPA) and Marco Bolchi (EY) outlined the broad-ranging benefits of the EU Space Programme for society at large.
The event was a strong reminder of how space, often perceived as remote has a profound and growing impact on life here on Earth. From economic resilience to environmental stewardship and social well-being, the discussions at Space Economy Days 2025 reaffirmed the importance of measuring and communicating these benefits clearly.
A heartfelt thank you goes out to all the speakers, attendees, and contributors who made this year’s event such a success. Special recognition is due to the organizing team: Charlotte Mathieu, Stéphanie Willekens, Chiara Micheli, Alessandra Martina, and Paul Silye, whose dedication and coordination brought the programme to life.
